Stunning errors, but still good resource: 
I was pretty much appalled to see the entries on the Noahic flood. The authors give absurd weight to the many Middle Eastern Mythologies, all but saying that the Bible's content is on par with mythology. The statement that there is no evidence for a worldwide flood is grossly inaccurate. The authors fall for the all-to-common fallacy of tremendously underestimating the impact of the flood. It's like a flea standing on an elephant saying "there's no proof that an elephant exists"...because the flea is too...more info
A really useful and commendable commentary:
I favor the use of commentaries when studying Bible passages as a means to dig deeper into the meaning of the Scripture through the times and then ease my understanding of the personal message in it for me. This excellent commentary is clearly organized and well focused on the hundreds of phrases subject to analysis. IVP Bible Background Commentary: Old Testament:
This book is amazing. It is extremely helpful. The commentary is rife with historical documentation which makes the verses come to life in a way that was not possible before. Also, it puts the biblical verses into context like never before. This is especially useful in today's society where so much of the Bible is taken out of context. I highly recommend this book both to the scholar, as well as to the layman. Anyone and everyone would find this useful to their daily devotions.
